Hey there, I'm

Sophia Martinez

Welcome to Overgeareed — where passion meets flavor and every recipe tells a story.

I'm so happy you're here. If you've found your way to this cozy corner of the internet, you probably love food just as much as I do — the smells, the colors, the comfort, and the joy it brings to people.

Who I Am

I'm a 32-year-old home cook, recipe developer, and passionate food blogger based in Austin, Texas. I was born and raised in San Antonio, in a loud, loving Mexican-American household where food was the center of everything.

I'm the middle child of three — squeezed between my older brother Marco and my younger sister Elena. Growing up, our house was always full of noise, laughter, and the smell of something delicious cooking. My parents, Rosa and Miguel Martinez, ran a small family restaurant for over 15 years before retiring, so you could say food is literally in my blood.

My Education & Early Years

High School

Jefferson High School in San Antonio — where I was more interested in the home economics kitchen than the classroom. I brought homemade cookies to every school event!

University

Texas State University in San Marcos — studied Mass Communications with a minor in Marketing. My tiny dorm room meals turned into apartment dinner parties.

Career Shift

Graduated in 2015, worked in marketing, but my heart wasn't in it. By 2019, I took the leap and started Overgeareed full-time!

A Little More About Me

When I'm not in the kitchen experimenting with new flavors, you'll probably find me:

  • Browsing the Mueller Farmers' Market on Sunday mornings
  • Taking care of my small herb garden (rosemary, basil, mint, and cilantro)
  • Going on morning runs along Lady Bird Lake with Pepper, my rescue beagle
  • Curled up with a good cookbook — my collection has over 80 books now
  • Rewatching cooking shows (I've seen every season of MasterChef at least twice)

I'm also a big believer in giving back. Once a month, I volunteer at Mobile Loaves & Fishes, a local organization that provides meals to homeless communities in Austin. It keeps me grounded and reminds me why food matters beyond just taste.

How My Cooking Journey Began

My love for food started at home. I grew up watching my abuela, Carmen, turn simple ingredients into magic. Her kitchen in San Antonio was my favorite place in the world — the sizzle of onions in her old cast-iron skillet, the smell of fresh flour tortillas on the comal, and her gentle humming as she stirred pots of beans and rice.

"Mija, taste as you go. Your tongue knows more than any recipe."

— Abuela Carmen

She never used measuring cups or timers. Everything was done by feel, by memory, by heart. Those early years taught me that cooking is more than a skill — it's a language of love.

When abuela passed away in 2018, I felt lost for a while. But I realized the best way to honor her was to keep cooking, keep sharing, and keep that warmth alive.

What You'll Find Here

On Overgeareed, you'll find recipes that inspire, comfort, and bring joy to your table:

  • Breakfasts that start your day with warmth and energy
  • Lunch ideas that are quick, balanced, and full of flavor
  • Dinner recipes that bring everyone together
  • Baking adventures with breads, cakes, and cookies
  • Snacks for cozy, in-between moments

Every recipe is tested multiple times in my own kitchen, written with clear step-by-step instructions, and made with love. Because food should make life easier, not harder.

My Cooking Philosophy

Cooking doesn't need to be perfect or complicated. It just needs to feel real.

I believe that great food comes from love, curiosity, and a little bit of playfulness. You don't need fancy tools or rare ingredients to create something special. My philosophy is simple: use what you have, trust your instincts, and don't be afraid to make mistakes — some of my best recipes came from happy accidents.
